NEW YORK -- Comedy Central says it's bringing the animated comedy "Futurama" back from past cancellation for 26 new half-hour episodes.
The satiric sci-fi series, set in "New New York City" in the third millennium, will resume production more than six years after ending its four-season run on the Fox network in 2003.
In 2008, those original 72 episodes were supplemented by four extended-length adventures. Along the way, "Futurama" has found success with DVD sales and in repeat airings on Comedy Central.
The new episodes, produced as before by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, are expected to air on Comedy Central beginning in mid-2010. -

Animated comedy show Futurama is set to return to TV screens six years after it was cancelled.
The show, created by The Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening, was axed in 2003 following a sharp decline in ratings.
Program bosses refused to give up on the series, creating four straight-to-DVD films which were aired on America's Comedy Central network.
But bosses at US network Fox have now ordered a revival of Futurama, commissioning 26 new episodes which are due to be screened in 2010. -

In the immortal words of Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Good news, everyone! The animated science-fiction comedy “Futurama,” below, will be getting a new lease on life at Comedy Central, which has ordered 26 new episodes of the show, the network said in a news release. The series, created by Matt Groening (of “The Simpsons”) and David X. Cohen, follows the adventures of a present-day pizza deliveryman who wakes up a thousand years in the future. It enjoyed a five-season, 72-episode run on Fox, which was repeated on Cartoon Network and then on Comedy Central. In 2005 a deal was struck to produce four “Futurama” movies that were released first on DVD, then broadcast on Comedy Central as half-hour episodes. The DVDs were successful enough to spawn the new episodes, which Comedy Central plans to start showing in mid-2010. -
