So I had to retouch an old photograph for my Image Editing class, so I searched the 'Tubes for the most damaged and horribly disfigured photo I could find, and began cleaning in up... I was quite pleased with the results!

lol, not quite right, lemme see what I can do... Also, it's not a color photo, so going to grayscale SHOULD be ok, as the color is from a degraded photo.

I did actually make a black and white version quite similar to that, but I thought the sepia-toned one looked better. My instructor agreed, so I left it.

I also touched it up a little, so just use a sepia color replace mask. And the biggest reason I don't like the sepia color, is that it makes it look MUCH older than even the original photo. That and I prefer grayscale, since I did all that manga editing, lol.

Since when was cropping and using auto-levels touching up?

Since I didn't use auto-levels, however I did crop out a little, and edited out the torn photo on the bottom right, cleaned up around her mouth a little, and her neck. I didn't claim I spent hours on it like you probably did. that took all of 5 mins. And before you get all caught up on auto levels, I hate them with a passion, they're never quite accurate to what I want to see.

Nice fix lazlo, you even got the tears.
I can't see what dawn added to that photo though and am too lazy to do a side by side.

Yeah, I can see it, as to which looks better, I can't say. Mine looks a little weird where he fixed it, but it still looks odd in his too. Oh well, it's not like we're trying for perfection here.

Well, it was originally a black and white photo, so what you prefer isn't actually what it should have looked like, but hey, his teacher liked it, and that's what he turned in.
