First off, anime are NOT cartoons. I won't go into detail, since I doubt anyone wants to read some long, drawn out explination. All I'll say is that anime is an art form all it's own. The characters in anime can express and convey emotion and feeling far better than even real life can. I'd give a lot more details and examples, but like I said, I doubt you'd want to read some long thing. Anyhoo.. uh, anime or manga? That depends on the series, really. For example, while I'm completely adicted to the Love Hina manga, and think it's one of the greatest stories I've ever read, I can't stand the Love Hina anime. It's just.. horrible compared to the manga. But a series like The Slayers, I much prefer the anime to the manga. The manga isn't drawn as well as the anime is, and they leave out a lot of parts.. which is actually strange for a manga series, but oh well

I always felt that mangas, compared to their anime counterpart are, most of the time, deeper, more artistic in their traits. Usually anime are the consequence of a succesfull manga, and to fit all in a relative short time, cut and modification to the story have to be made, sometime it happens that the anime is way better compared to the manga like Slayers, or Excel Saga but these are exceptions. When the inverse take place (anime->manga) the resultant manga is usually poorly done, a clear example is Evangelion.
