City folks, don't worry. Nobody expects pigeons, more prevalent than manhole covers, will bring the deadly bird influenza.Pigeons are not immune in the virus. But tests indicate the birds pick it up only when they are exposed to extremely high doses, do not always become infected under those conditions and so are carriers only briefly."Pigeons aren't a big worry," said Rex Sohn, a wildlife disease specialist on the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis. "But to produce absolute predictions that pigeons will not susceptible to this virus, in whatever form it arises in United states, is not something you want to say."Government scientists seeking the first signs of the H5N1 bird flu strain in the usa are focusing on wild migratory birds, not resident birds including pigeons, starlings and sparrows that stay near to home.In February, a 14-year-old pigeon seller in Iraq died after decreasing with bird flu-like symptoms. Authorities said three of his cousins also were hospitalized with similar symptoms. There have been no pigeon die-offs in areas of the world experiencing H5N1 outbreaks, according to USGS wildlife disease specialist Grace McLaughlin.Three studies since the late 1990s by the Agriculture Department's Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens, Ga., have produced "more questions than we've answers," said the center's director, David Swayne. The lab has worked on bird flu considering that the 1970s.In one experiment, researchers squirted into pigeons' mouths liquid drops that contained the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus from the Hong Kong sample. The birds got about 100 to a single,000 times the concentration that parrots would encounter in nature. "We couldn't infect the pigeons," Swayne said. "So that's great news."In 2004, the lab did two more experiments. Employing a pigeon and a crow that had both died in Thailand, researchers gave 12 pigeons similarly high doses with the bird flu virus. Seven became infected the other died. Five others did not become infected."What that lets us know is that pigeons can be susceptible. But they're not uniformly susceptible," Swayne said. "Not like chickens or ducks — each will become infected."Infected pigeons carried herpes about 10 days. But they were infectious only for about two days and then at levels below exactly what it would normally take to infect a chicken."The experimental details are not very strong that pigeons will probably be spreading this virus around," Swayne said. "At this aspect they have not been implicated in spreading it to humans and farms." They call George Bush the Establishment Candidate for the reason that the Republican governors and members of Congress -- pros who wanted a proven commodity and massive name at the top of the ticket -- anointed him. None of them figured on the McCain phenomenon.Himself a McCain supporter, Gary Bauer explained what the Bush camp forgot take into consideration: That campaign was built with a lot of money early on, a lot of endorsements early on. And I think what everybody tended to forget was that one little group thats actually more valuable than money or endorsements, and thats voters.Yet as 26 Republican governors focused on Bush gathered in Washington, they stressed there was clearly concern, but no panic. Gov. Mike Leavitt, R-Utah, spoke to the gathering: The governors were with George Bush early. Were with him now. Well be around him to the end.Bushs supporters express it wasn't Republicans, but rather Democrats and Independents who were to blame for his big loss in Michigan. And theyll be barred from most of the key states ahead. As CBS News Correspondent Eric Engberg reports, some of the governors want Bush unleashed on the stump. According to Gov. Edward Schafer, R-N.D.,: We all would like George to be George. You understand hes a very personable individual. We should instead get him just with individuals; let him be himself instead of be so constrained by the people so much. I think hes been just a little tight.None of the governors are publicly criticizing the campaigns unprecedented expenditure of $400,000 a day, reported this week to the Federal Election Commission. But party insiders repeat the big contributors and the fundraisers aren't happy. These men and women are business folks. That like to win. They dont really understand whats happening and they dont understand how possibilities are $55 million and not be at the top. explains Scott Reed, a GOP activist.Bush had originally planned to talk to the Republican governors in Washington in a few days. But the kingmakers who were among his earliest presidential backers understood perfectly when he told them that something unforeseen had happened anf the husband needed to stay on the campaign trail.
Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore is clinging to a narrow nationwide lead over Republican rival George W. Bush, even though the vice president's positions on key issues remain very famous the candidate himself. In accordance with a Newsweek poll released Saturday, Gore leads the Texas governor 46 to 42 percent. Green Party candidate Ralph Nader drew the support of 2 percent of respondents, Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan won the backing of a single percent, and 9 percent were undecided or favored another minor candidate. The poll has a margin of error of four years old percentage points - the actual margin between Gore and Bush. In an interview with CBS News, Newsweek's polling director David Alpern said Gore's "clinging to the remnants of [his convention] bounce, but he remains marginally ahead."The poll also found women backing Gore 51 to 36 percent and men supporting Bush 48 to 40 %. The survey concluded that white, non-Hispanic voters backed Bush 48 to 41 percent while black, Hispanic and all other voters combined backed Gore 61 to 21 percent over Bush.Bills . respondents, in a two-way trial with other candidates excluded, Gore led Bush 49 to 45 percent.A week ago, a Newsweek poll found Gore, fresh off the Democratic convention, leading Bush 48 to 42 percent, with Three percent for Nader, 1 percent for Buchanan, with Six percent undecided or backing another person. The latest poll found that Gore's stands on key issues in the campaign were more attractive to voters than Gore himself. With no names attached to their respective proposals, Newsweek learned that respondents agreed with Gore's applying for grants tax cuts and on Social Security and retirement funds. If taxes are to be cut, 55 percent of those questioned backed Gore's proposal for targeted cuts to aid middle- and lower-income families pay for stuff like college tuition and long-term health care, while 39 percent favored Bush's plan for an across-the-board tax cut affecting all Americans.Similarly, those questioned agreed with Gore's position on with all the budget surplus to pay on the federal debt and make Social Security as well as the Medicare health care program to the elderly financially solvent as opposed to cutting people's taxes - 66 to 27 percent. The poll surveyed 753 registered voters who have been questioned Thursday and Friday by Princeton Survey Research Associates. So often, we think of China like a monolithic, monochromatic Communist country, the land of Marx and Lenin, reports CBS News Correspondent Barry Petersen. But the times, they are a-changin'. Just ask China's new women.Says Connie Fu: "I think I'm simply a very lucky generation because, you know, you can do whatever you want to do."Connie Fu utilizes an airline, one of four women within their 20s and 30s we searched for: single, well educated, working. We wondered what it's like for women in this new China. The solution: "This is a very exciting time," says May Zhou, that's as disciplined about exercise as she's about a career. She decided as a child she wanted an American education, and thus she got it: an MBA from Rutgers. Now she represents a united states company doing business in China, and ballet classes balance out long hours in the office. She explains, "I feel it's really a very elegant type of exercise, and that i train my body posture, i love to be with many ladies who contains the same desire to look good what they are."In many ways, Chinese women are actually as free to choose jobs and lifestyles as his or her American counterparts. Oddly enough, it was not a feminist who paved the way for Chinese women, but a Communist, as well as a man, at that. When Mao's revolution swept China in 1949, he decreed that, under communism, people were equal, meaning equal pay, equal jobs. So went the theory, but it took another revolution to really make it happen. It was a revolution called capitalism, and now women who dream of having all this (job, home and family) have that chance. "I attribute this to the economic development which has taken place in China during the last 20 years or so, especially following the opening door policy," says Jennie Wang, who works for an American company importing carpets. She could switch from speaking Mandarin to English such as the rest of us switch TV channels. Change has felt across Chinese society. Recently, the marriage rate was down 10 % from a decade ago. Angelia Li, for example, is living with her boyfriend. Less than many years ago, in strait-laced China, that could have been impossible. But today, she says, "it's becoming more and more usual in China now. A lot of my friends in Beijing have a similar life as I have now."Which means delaying having kids. This will likely alarm China's older generation. Don't worry, says Jennie; family could happen. She says, "I think my response is, everybody will get their turn, and i believe my turn will come eventually."They've come of age at a time when China itself is emerging into the world as never. They don't call themselves crusaders, or world changers, or feminists. They call themselves lucky and happy. Who could require more?© MMI Viacom Internet Services Inc. All Rights Reserved
Michael Brown, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency that's been heavily criticized for what many charge would be a slow response to the decimation due to Hurricane Katrina, now faces accusations that his resume is padded.Much of the criticism of the response to the hurricane has been geared towards Brown, whose qualifications for the task have been questioned. Some even have necessary him to be fired. Now, Time magazine is questioning the validity of Brown's White House biography in a article identifying several alleged discrepancies. That bio along with a White House news release says Brown worked for the city of Edmund, Okla., overseeing its Emergency Services Division. But Carolina Miranda, a reporter for Time, tells Earlier Show co-anchor Rene Syler that doesn't appear to have been the truth."His bio, the White House website article, and a number of sources list him as assistant city manager in Edmund, Okla.," Miranda says. "When we referred to as folks in Edmund, they told us that, no, his position the truth is had been assistant to the city manager, that is a purely administrative job, a very different job. He was an administrative assistant. It's kind of an entry-level, intern-type job for somebody who's wondering about government. …When he began that job in 1977, he used to be a college student. He didn't graduate along with his B.A. until 1978."Miranda says she isn't sure that's responsible for that type of error."That, we'll must wait to see and find out," Miranda says. "But the reality is, it's an error that's been repeated many times, on his FEMA bio, the White House pr release. It's the kind of thing you'd think somebody would've caught it by now but, clearly, nobody has." no previous page next 1/2 Yet at the same time they learn more about how the disease may spread, British health authorities are implementing new precautions. In hospitals, as an illustration, routine tonsil surgery now have to be done with disposable instruments.
Vazquez has stated the men signaled for help, but the ship did not stop. ebay mulberry handbags The warning signs are clear.Advanced nursing programs are steadily shrinking. Nursing bachelor's degree enrollment last year was off almost 5 percent, and shortages are growing, CBS News Correspondent Thalia Assuras reports. It becomes an all-too-common complaint. In New Jersey hospitals this season alone, nine hospitals have already been cited for not having enough nurses on their own floors. In fact, a recent study indicates the nursing shortage is spreading nationwide. Ninety-four percent of hospitals in the west have declared or expect you'll declare a shortage; 82 percent within the Northeast; 75 percent in the Midwest. The biggest concern is for the future. Projections are that, in 2 decades, the country will have 20 percent fewer nurses of computer needs. And with competition for qualified nurses already fierce, hospitals like Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Conn., are inclined all-out now to attract recruits."We're trying every creative mode we can come up with," said hospital official Mary Prybylo. Which includes an aggressive ad campaign with billboards and radio spots. The hospital even offers bonuses of several thousand dollars to recent nursing school graduates, like Wendy Richardson, now a registered nurse."A lot of places are offering bonuses. In addition there are increases in pay rates for per diem workers which kind of thing. All's you should do is look in the classifieds to see what the situation is like," she said. But not all hospitals have been motivated to vigorously address the problem now.Nj mom Sharon Kroll has her hands full along with her two boys, and an extra challenge with six-year-old, Michael. He is developmentally delayed and has several physical problems."I never allow out of my sight," said Kroll. "You constantly should be with him."Michael's frequent, life-threatening seizures have landed him inside the hospital more than ten times. It's in the hospital where Kroll did not have a much to be on guard just as jane is at home, and taking on duties which can be normally the responsibility of a nurse. In her local hospital, Kroll must be near her son constantly, "to be sure he's stabilized, doesn't have any more seizures, doesn't try and pull out IV's, doesn't try to fall out of bed and hurt himself."Because, Kroll says, the reality is, she finds nurses largely unavailable at her hospital. "Unfortunately, they're busy online websites."So for Sharon Kroll, a solution to the nursing shortage can't come quickly enough. "If I was not there, he would definitely not get the care he needs at all. I worry about it a good deal."And it's a worry many Americans will likely be confronted with if the number of nurses will continue to decline.
Even before the Olympic games get arrived, the choice of a host city is a competition all its own. With a corruption scandal widening around Salt Lake City's bid to host the Winter Olympics, some are questioning whether Nagano organizers unfairly enticed the IOC to win the bid, reports CBS News Correspondent Barry Petersen. The Olympic flame that's lit in Nagano was not the sole fire there. Another fire burned 90 books of records on what the Japanese wined, dined, and won over the members of the International Olympic Committee in early 1990s, especially the more than 60 who traveled to Nagano. The style at Nagano comes in the midst of the widening corruption scandal sparked by Salt Lake City's bid to lure winter months Olympics wth hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, scholarships, and gifts to IOC members along with their relatives.Samikazu Yamaguchi, a senior an affiliate the Nagano bid committee who quietly ordered records burned in 1992, says they wanted specifics of their trips kept secret. He insists there was clearly nothing to hide.By burning the books, the Nagano bid committee arrives ahead on two points. First, it may keep claiming that everything it did was right. Second, those alleging wrongdoing will discover it all but impossible to prove allegations, say for example a charge that IOC members were treated to free department store shopping sprees. However, there were a good amount of freebies allowed by IOC rules, starting with first-class plane tickets to Japan. IOC members along with their wives stayed in lovely little resorts just like the ones in the mountains above Nagano. They were given free hotel rooms, lavish dinners, and in many cases geisha girls to pour the sake. No surprise, by some estimates, the Nagano bid committee spent just as much as $26,000 per person entertaining them. Then there was the gifts. Eisetsu Shiratori, a famous Japanese artist, gave IOC members prints of his works, only to hear later that some sold off his prints while still visiting in Japan. On Tuesday, a Finnish member of the IOC resigned, the first member of the international committee to step down in the Salt Lake City Olympic scandal. Former middle-distance runner Pirjo Haggman, 47, had been an IOC member since 1981, and was one of the primary two women on the committee.Reported By Barry Petersen Authorities say two Goldman Sachs employees made over $6.7 million through insider trading by enlisting an analyst who provided information on Wall Street deals along with a forklift driver who leaked copies of your market-moving magazine.Prosecutors called it one of the most extensive insider trading cases in decades, and it has no shortage of salacious details. The truth includes allegations that the men tried to get strippers to coax stock tips from investment bankers who had inside knowledge of pending mergers and acquisitions."We've never seen before a case involving so many different attempts to obtain information illegally," said Mark Schonfeld, regional director with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which brought civil charges against 13 people. He said the case was discovered by regulators who noticed unusually high trading volume before a merger announcement. A close look showed that a 63-year-old retired seamstress in Croatia - the aunt of just one of the defendants - had made over $2 million.Schonfeld said she was "either one of the most successful investor in the reputation Wall Street or something more nefarious had place."U.S. Attorney Michael J. Garcia told a news conference that the case shows that two of Wall Street's most important firms had workers "who, motivated by greed, are willing to place their careers and their liberty in danger."The FBI Tuesday arrested Eugene Plotkin, 26, of Manhattan, a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst, as well as a friend from college, Stanislav Shpigelman, 23, of Brooklyn, an analyst at Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc.'s mergers and acquisitions division. Both were held on $3 million bail after brief appearances in federal court. Once free on bail, Plotkin must undergo electronic monitoring while Shpigelman are required to follow an evening curfew.Katherine Pringle, Shpigelman's lawyer, declined to comment.Martin Schmukler, Plotkin's lawyer, said: "This fellow went along to Harvard and graduated with honors. Up until today, he was considered a very good catch and hopefully after this case is over he'll always be considered a good catch."It also arrested Juan Renteria, a 20-year-old Milwaukee resident accused of working as a forklift operator at Quad/Graphics Inc. so he could steal early copies of Business Week magazine before it was released on the public. It was not immediately clear who was simply representing Renteria.Garcia said the three men were part of a wide-ranging plot that included David Pajcin, an ancient Goldman Sachs analyst who is cooperating with all the government. no previous page next 1/2

mulberry york NASA officials said Sunday that space shuttle Columbia experienced an unexpected and extreme boost in temperature on the fuselage moments prior to the craft broke apart.NASA space shuttle program manager Ron Dittemore said the temperature rise -- 60 degrees over a few moments in the mid-fuselage -- was followed by an elevated sign of drag that caused the shuttle's computerized flight control system to attempt to make an adjustment for the flight pattern.CBS News Correspondent Bob Orr reports that more than a dozen sensors, a lot of them in the left wing utilized to measure temperatures, hydraulics, and tire pressure, were lost one after another. It was a sequential failure consistent with a catastrophic breakup.Dittemore cautioned that the evidence had been preliminary, but that one of many possibilities was that there been damage or even a loss of thermal tiles that protect the shuttle from using up during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere."We are earning progress," Dittemore said, adding that the combination of new engineering data as well as an observer who reported seeing debris from your shuttle while it used to be passing over California may create "a path that may lead us to the cause."The shuttle left each other shortly before landing Saturday, killing all seven astronauts. Nearly all of its debris landed in eastern Texas and Louisiana.CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston reports about the tragic sequence in the warnings from Columbia's automatic sensors. 8:15 a.m. -- Columbia's descent began within the Indian Ocean. Everything seemed fine because it crossed the Pacific.8:51 a.m. -- Entering airspace in the California coast, just north of San Francisco. On track for a touchdown in 25 minutes at Kennedy Space Center.8:53 a.m. -- The sudden loss of data from the hydraulic system, information indicating the position of flaps on Columbia's left wing.8:56 a.m. -- Another data disruption, to sensors in the brake lines and tires from the landing gear.8:58 a.m. -- Another data give up, from sensors that monitor protective thermal tiles.8:59 a.m. -- A problem with data indicating landing gear pressure for the left side tires. Until that moment, reports Pinkston, mission control is at communication with the astronauts, alerting them in regards to the data problem – and Columbia acknowledged with a final "Roger, uh ..."Then all data transmission stopped.Earlier Sunday, NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe named an ancient Navy admiral to oversee a completely independent review of the accident, and said investigators initially would focus on whether a broken-off part of insulation from the big external fuel tank caused damage to the shuttle during liftoff Jan. 16 that ultimately doomed the flight 16 days later."It's area we're looking at first, early, to be sure that the investigative team is focusing on that theory," O'Keefe said. The insulation is known to have struck a piece of the shuttle's left side. One theory would be that the insulation may have damaged heat tiles that protected the left wing. This would have become an issue once the shuttle re-entered earth's orbit, says CBS News Space Consultant Bill Harwood. "If there had been a compromise in the heat shield protection system along with the heat actually got into the subsurface, underneath those tiles, that might lead to a bad day pretty quickly,'' said Harwood. "Whether you aren't the debris that has been seen after the launch brought about that, is not yet known." Speaking Sunday morning about the CBS news program Face The world, O'Keefe described the care that NASA takes to recover the debris."A massive amount federal environment as well as the state and local law enforcement officials and local services groups are helping us secure the evidence, to assure that there is no tampering with the evidence so we can produce a determination of exactly what did happen."We owe it on the families of the crew to find out exactly what happened, to inform them exactly what occurred, to share with the American people what occurred, correct the difficulties and assure that we fly safely in the foreseeable future," he said. O'Keefe said a completely independent commission -- made up of experts in the Air Force, the Navy, the Transportation Department and other agencies -- will study the accident. It will be headed by Admiral Harold Gehman who searched into the deadly attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in October of 2000. mulberry bags for sale Chef Govind Armstrong's signature style is packing lots of flavor into "small bites." Fancy finger meals is his specialty, which makes him the perfect chef to produce a New Year's Eve party menu. And here's some good news: you don't have to spend a lot of money to serve very sophisticated flavors. Regarding the chef: When Armstrong's "Table 8" opened in L.A. in late 2003, Bon Appetit magazine wrote: "It is tough to find a restaurant the location where the scene is hot, the chef is hotter, and the food is actually well worth the hype. Table 8 is simply such a place, because of the talents of executive chef and co-owner Govind Armstrong." There happens to be a "Table 8" in Miami too, and one set to open this winter in The big apple.Chef Armstrong began his career at 13, whilst convinced Wolfgang Puck to let him work in the Spago kitchen in West Hollywood. He went on to work at several well-known L.A. restaurants. He attended college in San fran and then moved to Europe to hone his skills. After putting in a few more years in L.A. kitchens, he opened his or her own restaurant, "Table 8," named as soon as the table where he met with investors to go over the new place. Last year, Armstrong published his first cookbook called "Small Bites, Big Nights," offering his signature design of small plates and "lounge" dining. Motorola recently issued money warning over handset sales.Stocks earlier traded firmly higher following the unexpected revision to fourth-quarter growth. "There's some a boost from the GDP and a little bit of a need for stability," said Jay Susskind, director of trading at Ryan, Beck & Co. Stocks rallied the other day on hopes the Federal Reserve is leaning nearer to cutting interest rates when the economy weaken a lot of. But Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Wednesday said the central bank remained worried about inflation, putting a damper on those hopes. With fourth-quarter growth revised slightly higher Thursday, "the market knows that things aren't just like was thought the other day, but not as bad as was thought yesterday," Susskind said.Money-managers were also eager to fill their portfolios prior to the end of the month, which marks eliminate the first quarter. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting the two.2% estimate to be unrevised. red mulberry bag Forget the fancy tea fads; a new study suggests drinking plain old-fashioned black tea may fight stress and promote relaxation.Researchers in tea-loving London found people who drank black tea could actually de-stress more quickly than those who drank a fake tea substitute. Additionally, tea drinkers had 'abnormal' amounts of the stress hormone cortisol after exposure to stress."Our study points too drinking black tea may accelerate our recovery in the daily stresses in your life. Although it does not appear to reduce the actual levels of stress we experience, tea does seem to have a greater effect in bringing stress hormone levels back to normal," says researcher Andrew Steptoe, with the University College London, in a news release. "This has important health implications, because slow recovery following acute stress has become associated with a greater risk of chronic illnesses like coronary heart disease." Black Tea Fights StressIn the analysis, 75 young healthy male tea drinkers (average age 33) gave up their normal tea, coffee, and caffeinated beverages and were separated into two groups. For five to six weeks, one group drank a fruit-flavored caffeinated black tea mixture containing the ingredients of a cup of tea, along with the other drank an identical-tasting mixture containing exactly the same amount of caffeine but with no other active tea ingredients. Both groups were then afflicted by challenging tasks designed to mimic everyday stresses, much like the threat of unemployment or perhaps accusation, while their stress hormone, hypertension, heart rate, and self-reported stress levels were monitored. The tasks provoked sharp increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and subjective stress ratings in the groups. But 50 minutes as soon as the stressful situation, amounts of the stress hormone cortisol had dropped lower among black tea drinkers in comparison with the fake tea group. There was clearly also an increase in subjective relaxation at that time after the stressful situation in the tea mixture drinkers in comparison with the fake tea group.Additionally, researchers also learned that blood platelet activation was lower among black tea drinkers. Guys who drank black tea also reported feeling more relaxed after the task as opposed to other group. Platelet activation is mixed up in the formation of a blood clot, which increases risk of heart attack. New Evidence for Old Remedy"Drinking tea has traditionally been linked to stress relief, and many people feel that drinking tea enables them to relax after facing the stresses of every day life," says Steptoe. "However, scientific evidence for the relaxing properties of tea is quite limited."In this study, the participants didn't know who was drinking real or fake tea. Researchers say that means any differences were due to the active ingredients in the tea rather than to the relaxing ritual of drinking it or its taste.Steptoe says they do not know exactly which ingredients in black tea were to blame for these effects on stress recovery and relaxation. Bradford is on death row for killing two aspiring models noisy . 1980s. Authorities say Bradford, now 60, posed like a freelance photographer and shot photos of ladies he met at bars and elsewhere.During is trial, officials say Bradford might have made a taunting statement to jurors deciding whether he should be sentenced to death."Think of how many you don't have any idea about," Bradford said.About 50 of his photos of girls, many scantily clad and striking poses like amateur models, languished in the evidence room from 1984, when they were seized from Bradford's home, until detectives rediscovered them last month.Bradford's own daughter called in to police, The Los Angeles Times reported, stating that photo 48 was his ex-wife which she is alive. The la County sheriff's Web site had 25,000 hits alone since Tuesday.
